Is Claude better through the API than a subscription?
Some users perceive different quality across Claude surfaces. Documented routing opacity can explain real differences without proving deliberate subscription throttling.
What happened
Developers compared inconsistent quality across Claude Code subscriptions and API usage. Reports describe silent model fallback, pinned models not being honored and subagents using a different model.
What the evidence shows
GitHub issues establish mechanisms capable of changing behavior. Different surfaces can also apply different system prompts, tools, compaction, caching and safety settings.
What appears true
Some users may be observing real quality differences. Routing and harness opacity are sufficient explanations; intentional degradation is not required.
What remains uncertain
There is no controlled evidence that Anthropic deliberately provides inferior inference to subscribers.
